The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in collaboration with News Corp and The Wall Street Journal, is offering journalists from around the world an opportunity to sharpen their digital journalism skills, as well as support to develop data- and/or digitally-driven projects.

About Fellowship

  • During the fellowship, the journalist will be embedded for two months (September 15 – November 15) with WSJ. 25 days of the fellowship will be in-person in the WSJ’s New York City office.
  • The selected News Corp Media Fellow will have the opportunity to:
    • Contribute to WSJ projects on analyzing audience engagement
    • Lead peer-to-peer discussions
    • Promote an exchange of ideas and knowledge
    • Establish new partnerships and relationships with WSJ teams
  • The fellow will also have the opportunity to travel and meet WSJ colleagues at the bureau closest to them. This one-week site visit will include meetings with various teams and newsroom leaders.
  • The fellow will receive a stipend and expenses during their time in New York City will be covered.

Ideal Fellows

  • To be considered for the fellowship, journalists must:
    • Participate in two half-day webinars conducted by editors and reporters with expertise in digital tools, data journalism and visualization, artificial intelligence, mobile journalism and audience engagement. Webinars will be open to a select group of up to 50 journalists. Both webinars will occur in April.
    • Receive one of five news innovation grants to support a data or digitally-driven project. Only journalists who participate in both webinars are eligible to apply for these grants. Projects should promote new forms of storytelling, data journalism and visualization, or citizen engagement. Each grant recipient will also receive online editorial coaching and mentorship from experienced editors, reporters and experts.
  • Only journalists who complete both stages successfully will be considered for the News Corp Media Fellowship. The ideal fellow will be one who:
    • Has worked in a newsroom as a reporter
    • Is currently working in a newsroom
    • Has a strong news sense and curiosity
    • Demonstrates strong collaborative skills
    • Has an interest in audience engagement and building community
    • Is digitally savvy but wants to expand on skills like digital strategy and project management
    • Comes with ideas for several projects to work on during the fellowship

Requirements to Participate  

  • English-speaking journalists and editors with experience working with data, audience engagement, or newsletters are welcome to apply for the webinars – the first step toward the fellowship. Journalists from all countries are eligible for the opportunity.
  • While reporting skills will be useful, the fellowship has a non-reporting component, instead focusing on audience, newsletter and other digital journalism skills. The selected journalist should not expect to receive bylines during their fellowship.

Submissions open for Young Storytellers to submit Digital Content from LLDC Countries

Are you a young person between 18-35 years old from a landlocked developing country (LLDC)? United Nations is looking for passionate and creative storytellers from LLDCs to submit digital content (photos or videos) showcasing the compelling stories and unique experiences of young people in these nations.

A selected number of fellows will be fully funded to participate in the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Landlocked Developing Countries to be held in Kigali in June 2024.

Benefits

  • Selected entrants will join the Land linked fellowship program in the lead up to the 3rd UN Conference on LLDCs to be held in Kigali in June. Fellows will receive professional cameras, training, and mentorship to increase their storytelling skills. A select group of fellows, chosen to ensure geographical diversity, will be fully funded to exhibit their work at LLDC3 in Kigali which is set to be one of the largest gatherings of world leaders in 2024.

What are they looking for?

  • They look for authentic and compelling storytellers who can capture the essence of life in Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) through visuals.
  • The best entries will be selected according to the quality of the storytelling (i.e. arguments, good writing, composition of the image), although the selection panel will take into particular consideration entrants whose native language is not English. All entries will be assessed by a panel of judges. The panel’s decision will be final.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This call for submissions is open to young people between the ages of 18 to 35 from the 32 landlocked developing countries: Afghanistan; Armenia; Azerbaijan; Bhutan; Bolivia (Plurinational State of); Botswana; Burkina Faso; Burundi; Central African Republic; Chad; Eswatini; Ethiopia; Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Lao People’s Democratic Republic; Lesotho; North Macedonia; Malawi; Mali; Mongolia; Nepal; Niger; Paraguay; Republic of Moldova; Rwanda; South Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkmenistan; Uganda; Uzbekistan; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

Story Requirement

  • Participants must have created the entry by themselves.
  • Entries can be videos or photos, but use your imagination to make them unique! However, all entries must follow the following specifications:
  • Videos – 1080p resolution, no longer than 1 minute 
  • Images – in JPG or PNG format, minimum 800 x 800 pixels.
