Donor Name: Academy of International Affairs North Rhine-Westphalia (AIA NRW)

 Grant Size: Not Available

The Academy of International Affairs North Rhine-Westphalia (AIA NRW) offers fellowships (in the form of buy-outs and stipends) for outstanding scholars and practitioners to spend time in Bonn, the German UN-City, to conduct projects that focus on important questions in the field of international politics.

AIA NRW provides a professional platform and unique environment that fosters dynamic and vibrant exchange in an international, interdisciplinary setting.

The Fellowship Programme is the centre of the Academy, where tomorrow’s knowledge is created. Scholars and experts from all around the world find ideal conditions to pursue research projects on relevant issues in international politics.

The fellowship programme is premised on the presence of fellows at the Academy. Interested experts can apply for stays between three and ten months and are expected to reside in Bonn during this time. Stays can take place between April 2025 and March 2026.

They are interested in innovative projects that focus on issues in the general field of International Politics as well as projects that address issues of Translocalism and Subnational Diplomacy.

Applications that address the focus topic or other vital questions in the field of International Politics are welcome. Both individual and tandem projects can be considered.

Applicants can apply to one of the following two tracks:

  • Academic Track
    • For projects that have an explicit academic focus, linking up to ongoing or emerging academic debates, and provide a clear objective on how they contribute to a better understanding of international politics.
  • Practitioner’s Track
    • For projects that reflect on international politics from the perspective of practical experience in a relevant professional field and provide a clear objective on how they contribute to a better understanding of international politics.

Expectations

  • Fellows are expected to reside in Bonn during their fellowship without any longer absences. A regular, active participation in in-house and collaborative activities, including contributions to the publication series at the Academy, are part of a fellowship as well as a willingness to promote activities at the Academy by engaging with stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria

  • They invite both senior and younger scholars (post-doc level and upwards) from all academic disciplines and practitioners from politics, diplomacy, media, business and civil society to apply for fellowships with a duration between three and ten months at AIA NRW in Bonn.
  • The fellowship programme of the Academy is aimed at outstanding and dedicated scholars and practitioners of all nationalities. They welcome applications from disciplines that contribute to debates in the broader context of international politics. Scholars from postdoc levels onwards are eligible to apply to the academic track. The practitioner‘s track invites applications from experts with professional experience in the fields of politics, diplomacy, business, NGOs or the media. The fellowship programme offers a unique exchange between research and practice and builds on a mutual openness to engage.
